- Crashes involving Heavy Motor Vehicles (HMV) in the Waikato are more likely to result in a fatality –
25% compared to 16% nationally - Currently drivers can work a 13 hour day and up to 70 hours per week before a 24 hour break is required
- HMV drivers have the primary responsibility for only around 34% of the fatal crashes
for which they are involved in - Speed, fatigue and vehicle roadworthiness are 3 common causes of crashes
- Between 2003 and 2005, 50 heavy vehicle occupants were killed in road crashes nationally –
out of these only 16 were wearing a safety belt at the time of the crash
WHAT CAN YOU DO TO REDUCE THE RISK?
- Aim for a 5 star Operating Safety Rating
- Keep It 10 Below – drive 10 km/h below the posted speed advisory limit on bends
- Wear your safety belt
- Pre-trip vehicle walk around inspection before starting each shift
- Ensure your load is secure before you leave, and again during the trip
- Arrive fit for work and make healthy food choices
- Take your breaks to reduce fatigue
