DID YOU KNOW?

  • Crashes involving Heavy Motor Vehicles (HMV) in the Waikato are more likely to result in a fatality –
    25% compared to 16% nationally
  • Currently drivers can work a 13 hour day and up to 70 hours per week before a 24 hour break is required
  • HMV drivers have the primary responsibility for only around 34% of the fatal crashes
for which they are involved in
  • Speed, fatigue and vehicle roadworthiness are 3 common causes of crashes
  • Between 2003 and 2005, 50 heavy vehicle occupants were killed in road crashes nationally –
out of these only 16 were wearing a safety belt at the time of the crash

WHAT CAN YOU DO TO REDUCE THE RISK?

  • Aim for a 5 star Operating Safety Rating
  • Keep It 10 Below – drive 10 km/h below the posted speed advisory limit on bends
  • Wear your safety belt
  • Pre-trip vehicle walk around inspection before starting each shift
  • Ensure your load is secure before you leave, and again during the trip
  • Arrive fit for work and make healthy food choices
  • Take your breaks to reduce fatigue
